Selected images from Jones Memorial Library Manuscript Collection 1762, the John C. Noell Papers. These images included miscellaneous receipts and tax receipts from the collection, mostly related to enslaved persons.
The papers include receipts from court clerks of Lynchburg, Amherst, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Roanoke, & Pittsylvania Counties, Virginia for transactions involving Noell. Also included are papers relating to the settlement of Noell's estate, including lists of "Negroes and Lands" belonging to Noell family members. The enslaved persons are listed by name and estimated value, one list includes ages.
John C. Noell (1789-1862) lived in Bedford County, Virginia and may have operated a store in 1849 and done business with Samuel Garland. - Digital Format

I recd your note today, and was glad to hear from home, and that all were right well.
In regard to the "[Plaeter]" it is ($850) Eight 30/100 dollars per [illegible] "[___h]."
Neither of the parties you wrote me to [illegible] sell it in time. So you can write to me what to do about it.
I don't know whether or not I can come up Easter. If I conclude to come I will drop you a postal. If not I will be up in a very short time.
No news of interest in the city. Times are rather dull just now, but "Spring trade" will open now in a short

The Court convened thereupon and
further heard on the papers formerly read and the report of
Chs W Benford made in pursuance of the order made at
the November Term 1817 and exhibits accompanying the same
and was argued by Counsel. On consideration whereof the
Court doth at present adjudge order and decree that the
deft Allen L Ellyson out of his own goods and chattels
pay to the deft John C Roach admr of Thos Albright dec'd
the sum of $121.25 with legal interest from $67.50 a part thereof
from this day until paid and that he do in like manner
pay to the deft Mrs C. Ford admr of Mary Albright dec'd
the sum of $121.25 with like interest from $67.50 a part thereof
from this day until paid and as to all other matters this
Cause is Continued.
